Happier, healthier New Years resolutions for 2016

It’s so easy to feel cynical about New Year’s resolutions. How many of us have vowed to hit the gym to find ourselves peacefully couch surfing with the cat by the end of January? However, the global agreement to reflect and set the intention to be better people is really beautiful. It is unfortunate that these resolutions usually take the form of skinnier, stronger, more beautiful instead of happier, healthier, more grateful, and more loving.

Post rain sweat sticks my bare soles to the porch.
The air heavy with relief and the cold
close behind. The Dogwood tree bracts just
unfurling green and expectant waiting to hold
white unbloomed blossoms.

The waves lap the hull then fall back on themselves
disapating into sea foam.
Lap, fold, hiss.
The schooner rocks gently, cradled
on a deep royal blue blanket spread past the horizon.
My body, cross legged and rocking on my sitz bones,
mirrors the movement, shifts
with each rise and fall, a slight lean.
Lines creak, straining against the breeze
that billows the sails floating through the air like clouds.
The sun hits my shoulder blades and falls against
the nape of my neck as I close my eyes
to just listen, to just feel.
Out in the silence, it is incredibly loud.
Lap, fold, hiss.

I had some friends over last weekend. My husband is out of town, so we had a girl’s night. I made tacos and friends brought salad, salsa, humus, chips, and wine (LOTS OF WINE).

On Sunday, we set sail for the open ocean. We could see the water color change as we left harbor. Close in to Isla Providencia, the water changed between bright turquoise where it covered white sand to a deeper more green turquoise. But the ocean is a deep and endless royal blue. It’s absolutely nothing like our slice of the Atlantic or the Chesapeake Bay. The color is vibrant and unsullied.

Unlike in San Andres, the catamaran docked in the town center on Providencia. We disembarked, passed through yet another document check and found ourselves in the midst of town. Providencia is tiny. There are a few groceries and a town park, which has WiFi. The town center has a big compass rose painted on the concrete that you pass over to access the dingy dock. There were a few people milling around asking if we needed a taxi. We politely refused.

Before traveling to Isla Providencia and Guanaja, I had never been offshore on a boat with no land in sight, I had never been to the Caribbean, and I hadn’t left the United States in almost ten years. I talk travel. I feel envious of friends recounting their foreign adventures. But I continuously talked myself out of travel. So, when my husband’s family friends, Greg and Laura, who own Yorktown Sailing Charters, headed south to Panama for the winter on their schooner, we got on board. Also, to keep my sanity through this cold, wet, dark winter, I needed sunshine and warmth.

One of the things I love about Sundays is the endless potential for projects. I don’t even have to pick one project. I can spend all day Sunday working in the kitchen, sewing, reading, and writing. There is nowhere to go and I don’t have to change out of my pajamas.

Happy New Year!

This year we celebrated with some friends at our house over homemade pizza and hummus and went to see our friend’s band play. We started the night early, making pizzas in our half sized oven with everything from goat, blue, feta, and mozzarella cheeses to avocado, olives, peppers, onions, and fresh basil.

In The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin says we derive much of our happiness from the preparation for or anticipation of an event. Without realizing it, I have been actively cultivating happiness or Christmas spirit by enjoying the preparation and anticipation of the holiday itself.
